Rick Butts, PE

Founder

Rick Butts, Owner and Manager of EE Design Tools, LLC, is a Professional Engineer specializing in electrical power and controls, currently licensed in several states. He graduated from Ohio State University in March 1981 with a degree in electrical engineering, focusing on the control of rotating machinery.

Rick began his career at Union Carbide (1981-1983) before joining Frito-Lay in Dallas, Texas. He worked at Frito-Lay until 1997 when he launched his own electrical engineering consulting firm. A few years later, the business was incorporated as EE Design Service, LLC, which continues to operate today.

With extensive experience in industrial power and controls, Rick has been involved in numerous projects, taking on roles that include design, engineering, construction support, startup, and commissioning.

Rick’s career began in an era when construction documents were prepared by hand, fostering a deep understanding of the essential documentation required to build quality systems. His experience with the NEC® started on his first day at Union Carbide in 1981 and has been a significant part of his work ever since.

Entering the field before the advent of modern technologies provided Rick with valuable insights into the evolution of electrical design, engineering, and construction as it exists today. With almost 44 years of experience, Rick has a clear vision and finds joy in paying it forward for the next generation.
